Geneva mayor fined for causing crash
Geneva’s mayor will have to mind his motoring after being fined and placed on six months of supervision following his conviction for a driving infraction Tuesday.Kevin Burns, 46, was found guilty of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in Kane County traffic court.
The mayor was cited by his own city’s police department around 5 p.m. on Dec. 11 after he reportedly rear-ended a van that was stopped at a traffic light in the 800 block of West State Street, shoving that vehicle into another van that was stopped ahead of it.
No one was injured in the collision, though Burns was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, his attorney, Douglas Cuscaden said following a brief court appearance. Burns, who was not in court, told the reporting officer that he wasn’t sure why he failed to stop in time.
In addition to the supervision, Judge Joseph Grady ordered Burns to pay a $175 fine.
The judge ordered a longer-than-usual period of supervision because it was the mayor’s second violation in less than a year, Cuscaden said. In January 2010, Burns was ticketed for passing in a no-passing zone, and was later fined $185 and placed on supervision, according to court records.
