Playwright Theresa Rebeck wrote the pilot; Michael Mayer will direct. Coupling fans should be excited about this as it seem Jack Davenport has joined the budding cast of Smash. McPhee could be the new Lea Michele. The network’s answer to ‘Glee,’ based on an idea by Spielberg, the show follows the production of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. WikiLeaks: Saudi Oil May Have Peaked

The Guardian reports today on another WikiLeaks cable, this time about oil production in Saudi Arabia. Based on conversations with Sadad al-Husseini, a geologist and former head of exploration at Aramco, the Saudi state oil company, the U.S. consul general thinks the Saudis have been significantly overstating both the size of their reserves and their production capacity:

The cables, released by WikiLeaks, urge Washington to take seriously a warning from a senior Saudi government oil executive that the kingdom's crude oil reserves may have been overstated by as much as 300bn barrels — nearly 40%....According to the cables, which date between 2007-09, Husseini said Saudi Arabia might reach an output of 12m barrels a day in 10 years but before then — possibly as early as 2012 — global oil production would have hit its highest point. This crunch point is known as "peak oil".
....The US consul then told Washington: "While al-Husseini fundamentally contradicts the Aramco company line, he is no doomsday theorist. His pedigree, experience and outlook demand that his predictions be thoughtfully considered."....While fears of premature "peak oil" and Saudi production problems had been expressed before, no US official has come close to saying this in public.

This won't come as a surprise to anyone who's been following the oil industry over the past few years. Matthew Simmons' Twilight in the Desert, which I reviewed six years ago, made a detailed case that Saudi Arabia's production capacity had pretty much maxed out already, and Business Week published an article three years ago based on internal Saudi documents that said much the same: the Saudis could pump 12 million barrels a day in short spurts but only 10 million barrels on a steady basis — and that's all there is. Production capacity just isn't going up.
There's always Iraq, of course, which certainly has more production capacity if it can develop it, but Saudi Arabia increasingly looks like it's peaked already. And if that's true, it probably means that the global peak in production, which was delayed a few years by the 2008 recession, is most likely not too far away. Our future is going to be increasingly oil free whether we like it or not.

Jurors want to pay man they acquitted

At least three jurors in Cleveland say the evidence was so thin against a man jailed for weeks in an assault case that they want to give him their juror pay.
The jury quickly acquitted 19-year-old Demrick McCloud on Friday. He'd been charged with leading other teens to beat a high school student and threaten him with a gun on October 13. McCloud was arrested that day and held in jail until the trial.
The three jurors tell The Plain Dealer newspaper there was a "sheer lack of evidence," so they'll each give McCloud the $100 they were paid for jury service if he earns a high school equivalency degree.
A prosecutor's spokesman maintains in a statement that the victim was steadfast in identifying McCloud as an attacker.

Brett Favre. That's a good idea. Controversy is good for ratings". However, Warner says that the recent text scandal has dented Favre's legacy as one of the world's finest quarterbacks, he said, "I do think that hurt his legacy to some degree. I do think people look at him differently now - at least in the short term - than five years ago"
Back in October 2010, the former New York Jets star was investigated by the NFL over allegations that he had sent inappropriate messages to a pitch-side reporter named JENN STERGER. However, two months later Favre was found not to be in violation of the personal conduct policy but was fined $50,000 for failing to cooperate with the investigation.

MARVIN SEASE, the South Carolina-born singer who released his last album in 2008, has died after reportedly losing his battle with pneumonia, according to Variety. Sease initially began his career in gospel and formed a group with his three brothers. He later abandoned the genre and moved into R&B, releasing a self-titled album on his own 'Early' label. The record included the hit track 'Ghetto Man' and its success led to Sease being signed by London/Mercury in 1987 and the album being re-released. The new version included a 10-minute track entitled 'Candy Licker', which became Sease's signature song. The track was a smash-hit and the singer eventually took the title as his own nickname.
Despite never being a consistent presence in the charts, Sease became a cult figure on the soul and funk circuit and he recorded close to 20 albums on labels including Mercury, Jive and Silvertone. His sound was often compared to the likes of Johnny Taylor and Tyrone Davis'.

The real Dancing with the Stars will return to ABC on March 21, 2011.
